SINTERKLAAS IS IN TOWN!!!

5 December is getting closer and closer and that means that it’s almost time to celebrate Sinterklaas in the Netherlands!! But, just as last year, Sinterklaas also comes to Italy… to Lago Maggiore to be more precise. And obviously I can’t resist to celebrate a wonderful dutch tradition here in Italy. Just as last year it was fabulous….lots of dutch Sinterklaas songs, lots of dutch people, typical dutch soup (erwtensoep), hot chocolate and typical dutch sweets (pepernoten). I’ve had a fantastic afternoon!!!

I remember your post from last year…I’m glad it was a fun event again this year. It looks like it might have been colder this year as it appears that there is lots of snow on the mountains.

Yes Karen it was pretty cold and we already had the first snow last week…wasn’t much but still…In the mountains however there’s already lots of snow…But even though it was cod outside it was great fun :D, so again next year ;)

Looks like so much fun! How and when did this tradition get started in Italy? Is it the same day as the feast of Santa Lucia…or St. Nicholas? I can’t keep all the feast days straight ;/

Oh it’s fun indeed!! The tradition is celebrated in Italy for the past 34 years (if not mistaken). The evening of Sinterklaas is the 5th of December but a few weeks prior to that day he arrives in the country (normally The Netherlands, but fortunately also in Italy). He lives in Spain…don’t ask…children don’t do either ;) And about the other feasts…I can’t keep them straight either, especially here in Italy. In The Netherlands we only have a few, so that’s much better :)
