“CHIACCHIERE” FOR CARNIVAL

We’re in the middle of the fun period of Carnival! In Italy during this period you will find Le Chiacchiere just about everywhere in the stores. Delicious sweet crispy pastry made of dough, that has various shapes in various Italian regions, deep-fried or oven-baked and sprinkled with (powdered) sugar. I absolutely prefer the oven-baked by the way. They are heavenly!!!

Every region will call this carnival treat differently; Chiacchiere in Calabria, Bugie in parts of Piemonte, Cenci in Toscana, etc… Also in the United States these little treats, known as Angel Wings, are eaten mostly during Carnival. I’ve never made them myself (it’s really too easy to find them freshly baked around the corner) but Elaine of  The Italian Dish Blog made the ”cenci” version. Just go to her gorgeous website by clicking on the above link if you want to try her recipe!

Happy Carnival everyone!

Yummy, we ate something similar in Venice and it was heavenly. My husbands grandmother makes crostoli which is also very good, all this food is making me hungry :-)

Just found out that it’s very similar to “chiacchiere”…at least that’s what internet is telling me ;)

I used to make them all the time when I lived in Italy, we called them cenci or chiacchiere and they were not as flat as those in your pictures, we twisted them before frying.

Hi! Yes, you can find them in various types. The twisted once ar very common. In our surroundings a lot are flat. Fortunately they are good either way ;)

I’ve never heard of these but they look as if they’d be perfect dunked in a cup of tea!

my grandma used to bake them with chocolate cream on top…delicious…i also used to like the ones freshly baked with powdered sugar you could only get early in the morning from the local prestinaio (baker’s) as alternative to the usual focaccia…
